LETTERS TO THE EDITOR
MAY GOD SAVE
RICHENBERG!
ANDREW SULLIVAN RESPONDS
!)ear NVN Readers,
In respon...c 10 hoth Kenned) and VanButscl.
there :ore se,·emt points which need to he
understood and seen.
Ornahu had 1"0 ,d1ernati1·e newspapers. Tlw
,\ fe1mpoli1a11 and The Nebraska Obser.-er. hoth
engaged in reporting chi ld sexual abuse scandal
and never considered the source of such
information nor did they undcrsland how hype
was dcslro) ing constructive analysis of the
situaLiun.
Ooth ncws1>3pcrs arc now oul of business.
The} k~t lcgitimacy and credibtlity when the sc,
scandals were discovered 10 be part of extremist
mo,·emcnt and the papers perished.
The Times of rhe Hearrkmd is opening it..clf
up 10 the same Imp by taking at face \'alue the
allegations of child sexual abuse and failing 10
make distinctions in sexual miscooduc1, teen-age
sexual delinquency and actual child abuse.
Kenned} and Van8utsel say the Times
coverage has been "factual" and ..unbiased.. but
I wonder if such stories of priestly sexual abll5e
would be so readily accepted al face ,·alue if Ille
sk,ries were said about Jewish Rabbis.
I also 1-,,·e found serious naws and omission
of mfom, ation regarding the O udinal Bemaroin
sexual aoosc scandal.
Ste1•en <-:ook had made allegations of sexual
abuse eight )Cars ago bu! never men1ioocd
Bernardin and claims he only ..remembered ..
Bemardin as one of the pcrpeuators. Cook says
..therapy.. had helped him --rememhcr' the ahll<,e.
o,ok has been denounced by the Chicago gay
and lesbian community.
\ 'anButscl Slates lhal ..only as we come out
strongly opposed to child sexual abuse .. will the
m}thS and stclCOl}'JlCS • f homooexuals m<~csting
chi ldren be put to rest.
I disagree quite strongly and unequivocally.
Many gay and lesbian a~1ivists see a serious now
in the "coni;cnting adults" advocacy. Just al what
age. what moment does a child become an adult'/
\Vhe11 are they old enough to ride all the rides in
the amusement park'?
When they tum 13 and bll\ioess decide they
can't come in at half price? \\'hen Nebraska
Motor Vehicles gives lllcm a driver's license al
16? When they have lo register for the dral't and
register lo vote at 18? Or when they are allowed
to drink alcohol al 21?
In P\Jrtugal llw! •!IC of scxwl u•1sc.- is 12 ruxl

backgrounds to agree al what age a child becomes
anadulL
You can see why the distinction between a
pedophile and a homosexual is so easily blurred
and why just condemning child sexual abll'>C will
nc\'er end and 1he acclL~tion thal homosexuals
:uc child molesters.
I \\1Sh reahly was as simple as lhc arguments.
The l '.S. Senate v,~ed 99-0 to cul funds to the
. .- - -...• - - - - - - - - - - United Nations by~ until ii disassocialcs iL..clf
from groupsad,.ocating ..child moleslation" sucb
as !he North American ManiBoy Love A...ocialion
which is a member of the International Lesbian
and Ga~ Association.
As ihis happcns.j~, as 18 year olds gc1 false
ID to drink beer, so do 15 year old gay bo}S lie
about their age 10 sleep with men. Gay youth
don ·1 just kill themselves becam;e they arc gay
but often becalflC their uwu octions leads someone
~tobcacnminal. I ask why does the Time.t of 1he Heartla11d
accept stories of priests molesting children al face
value? Is it because ii is anti-Calholic'/ I say yes
10 the poml of making homosexuals look like
child molesters.
Sincerely,
Andrew Sullivan

UNITY STRESSED AT PRIDE SUMMIT
But Group Falls Just Short of Goal
Oay and Lesbian Awareness (GALA) will be
rcvi,·ed lo plan and coordinate this year's pride
cclebmtions. That was the oocisic•1 reached by
ahout fifty people, many of them representing
other Lesbian and Gay orgmlilllliO<LS, gatlicred al
Metropolitan ,..ommunity Church. February 20.
Thal decision is being protested by Rodney
Brown, who o rganized a new group. the Gay
Pride Coofdinating Committee, last month. But
m05I of those at U,e meeting dismissed Brown as
"uncoopcmtive" and "confrontational."
The community summit was convened by
the Gay and Lesbian Community Center (GLCC).
with lhc support of Spirit of Hope MCC and Gay
and Lesbian Services Network (GLSN). GLSN
is the parent organization of GALA, which
disbanded in December when U1c group lcanlC<l
th;11 Jasl year's event lost $10,()(X)and still owed
$8,500. Several GLSN representatives were
present at the meeting. but abstained from voting
on the decision to revive GALA.
Other organizaliofl,j rcpres<,ntoo at lhc ooocting
included: KC Rainbow Alliance of the Deaf,
Willow fux!uclion<;. Human Rights Project.. Show
Me J;recdom Band. Heartland Men's Chorus.
Tran.,gcndcrists and Twenty-Plus Club (created
during the meeting to rccogni.1.e and coordinate
all those present who have been working in the
Gay and Lesbian community for twenty years or
more).
"GLSN kept sa}ing the group had the op1ion
of using another structure,'' said Kevin Chafin, a
co-chair of GLCC. "llul there was pretty much
consensus among the group that GAi.A be
revil•cd. " Charin and others said utili1jng an
e,isting structure. such as GALA, made more
sense than creating a new organization.
Lois Rcbome, co-chair of GI.CC. credited
facilitators Jennifer Wilding and ('.())Jette P'anchol
with keeping the group (JO track and helping those
with different viewpoints "s)ntbesiz.e. It's what
made the niccting slJCC(.">.-<;ful. It could have been
a shouting match, but it never deteriorated,"
Rcb(,n,e said.
There was some dissension. howcvtt. l\llany
of the group's decisions during the meeting were
opposed by Brown and an unidentified guest.
Bf0\\ntoldthe News-Telegraph that he isoppoocd
to any association with GI.SN and "the
controversy". referring to last year's loss I le was
also critical of the meeting.
·11 was Uic stupidest Uling I've ever been to,"
Hrown said. '1t was concocted by self-appointed
leaders. "
Brown. who was fonncrly a volunteer with
GAi.A and organized numerous fundraisers at
an:a Lesbian and Gay bars. said he has already
scheduled fundraisers for this year's event.
·1 ·m going to go ahead with what l ·m doing."
he said "I'm goil\g to l?')ahcad and misc money
and see what happen.~."
Others al the meeting said they took issue
with Omwn 's unwillingness to cooperate with
GALA. which has an existing structure and a
system of accountability that Brown ·s group
hnsn 't developed yet.
·1 can raise the same questions." Brown said.
referring lo GALA 's debt.
But GI.SN
representatives said U1cy have made changes to
the way funds are aCCOWll.ed for that will reduce
the likelihood of a repeat of last year's fiscal
problems. Brown ·s group, Gl'CC. has no bylaws,
no b(,ard of directors, no budget. and, like GALA.
no money yet.
"l licard from him (Brown) that he was very
much in favor of unity and cooperation. but when
push came to shove, I didn ·1 see him embrace
that." said Reverend John Barbone. pastor of
MCC, noting that all of those present. except
Brown and the oUicr man, supported the decision
to revitalize GALA. "l'hc group would have
trealed any person \\;thout th.11 accountability lhe
same way. It was nothing personal toward
(Brown). but no one can represent the community
and misc money without accountability.
No decisions were made to establish the date
and location of pride events this year. though
there was discussion about connicLs with the Gay
Games and Stonewall 25. two large national
celebrations taking place in '.'\ew York Olis June.
which is lhe lraditional month for pride
eclebr.ition., in Kansas City.

RANDY SHILTS,
AIDS WRITER, DIES
Randy Shilts, perhaJl" the best-known AIDS
writer and the fir,;t openly Gay rcix, ner to write
regularly for a major daily newspaper. died late
February 16 at bis home in the Russian River
resort community or Guerneville. just north of
San Francisco. He was 42 years old
Arter writing ror a while for The AdvocaJe,
Shilts was hired in 1981 by the San Francisco
Chronicle, boooming the first openly Gay reporter
to work at a major daily newspaper.
Shilts took on AIDS researchers, accusing
them of looking for credit first aod a cure second.
He blasted the blood bank operators for thinking
of profits above safety. And, yet, Shilts found
himself at odds with much of San Francisct>'s
politically PQ"'erful Lesbian and Gay cooununity.
In the early I980's many activists denounced
Shilts ror advocating the closure of Gay
mthhouses in the city to help prevent the rurther
spread of AIDS.
In 1985 he finished his best-selling early
history or the AIDS epidemic, AJrd the Band
Played On, on the very day he himself lcamod be
bad te,sted po,.;tive for HIV. He chose not to go
public "'ith his HIV status until last year when
rumors of his deteriorating health became
widespread. saying be fearing disclosing his
infection would jeopardize his effectiveness as a
reporter.
Last February, after suffering a collapsed
tung and runx,r.; began ciJCulating abot.C his health,
Shilts confirmed that be in fact did have AIDS.
An often oorncwersial reporter and author. Shilts
said he bad kept his condition secret because
"every Gay writer woo tests po6itive end up being
an AIDS activist. and I didn't want to end up
being an activist."
Even though Shilts had AIDS himself. be
always insisted his criticism of the Gay
community's slow response to the epidemic was
prut of bis journalistic resix,nsibility.
'1iere I write a book that ~ Is the president,
that takes on the lll<lSt iOllllioent researchers or
our time, and 1$:ntially aocll9CS the blood bankers
of murder," Shilts said. "fo do all that and then
to not write about the failures within the Gay
community too that would have been disoooest.
And the on! y power that journalism has is when
it tells the truth."
Shilts also authored The Mayor of Castro
Street: The Ufe and Times of Han'l!y Milk aoout
the assassinated Gay San Francisco supervisor,
and more recently Condurt Unbecoming. about
the hist°')' of Gays and Lesbians in the mili~,ry.
Dr. Paul Volberding, a leading AIDS
researcher at the Uoh ers1tv of California in San
Francisco. said,~· Shills: "i-lc was really the first
reporter willing to speak out, willing to take on
the editors to get his stories in the papers, and he
alerted many people to the devnstating epidemic
we were goiOjZ lhro"!!h."
In I~ he was named OUISlanding author by
the American Society of Journalists and Authors.
In 1992-93 he was named journalist of the year by
the Northern Oilifomia chapter of the Society of
